He also did not like the lack of control of open grilling so he became determined to do something about it. George also desired to be able to place a lid over the top of his cooker. So he set out to design and build a grill that had a lid on top and a fire buring down below.

George Stephen just happened to be a welder with the Weber Brothers Metal Works company. The company's specialty was to make custom sheet metal products, including bouys that consisted of two half spheres welded together. He realized that if he used one half of the bouy that he could possibly create a grilling device.

This was the birth of the Weber grill, which was originally called sputnik by George. This was a perfect name because this project soon rocketed into the history books. They got so popular he could not make them fast enough. As a result of its popularity George and the Weber brothers decided to make a partnership. Eventually he bought out the Weber brothers and became the sole owner.

During the next twenty years George's company sold Weber grills and Weber grill parts throughout the mid-west. This led to it eventually becoming a nationally known product which was distributed through retail stores everywhere. Its popularity grew so great that the name Weber became synonymous with the barbecue grill.

In modern times the Weber-Stephens Company's product is now in more than 85 million households. It is the Weber grill that has helped to keep charcoal cooking popular. The Weber Company now manufacturers and markets charcoal and gas grills, along with the full line of Weber grill parts.

The Weber Company is still a family business owned by George Stephens and run by his twelve children and several grandchildren.
